The film stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe. His own understanding and maturity are what enable him to see his father as he really was, even before he reappears on the baseball field. ![]() "I only saw him when he was worn down by life," Ray says. Ray builds the field to bring back Shoeless Joe, his father's hero, the hero Ray accused of being corrupt because he knew that would hurt his father.Īnd of course at the end, it turns out that the dream all along was not bringing back the greats of baseball, but of a reconciliation with his father that was not possible before he died. Ray tells Mann that his father's name was used for a character in one of Mann's books. It begins with Ray's description of growing up, using his refusal to play baseball as his teenage rebellion, and as a way to test his father's love. With these words, Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is inspired by a voice he cant ignore to pursue a dream he can. There are echoes of Ray's father throughout the movie. The themes of this pleasantly satisfying movie are dreams, family, and baseball. Ray finds him, and together they hear the voice say "Go the distance." This leads them back in time to find an elderly doctor ( Burt Lancaster), who had a brief career in baseball but never got a chance at bat and they set out to find Mann. The voice speaks again: "Ease his pain." Ray comes to understand that this refers to an iconoclastic author of the 1960s named Terrence Mann ( James Earl Jones), now a recluse. Jackson was the hero of Ray's father, a former minor leaguer, with whom Ray had never been able to connect. And Jackson does show up, with his teammates. Ray and his wife (Amy Madigan) know this is a crazy thing to do, but they do it. In FIELD OF DREAMS, Ray Kinsella ( Kevin Costner) stands in the middle of his first Iowa corn crop and hears a voice say, "If you build it, he will come." He begins to understand that this means he must plow under the corn crop and build a baseball field so that Shoeless Joe Jackson, barred from baseball since 1919 and dead for years, can play on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then set your camera to Live View, zoom in on your LCD, and carefully adjust the lens focus ring until you get a perfect result! 4. In the latter situations, I’d recommend switching your lens over to manual focus. Occasionally, however, you’ll run into a situation where your scene features very little contrast or the only clear contrast exists far behind your main subject. As long as you can find some part of your shot that’s contrasty – a few rocks, a lone tree, or a river – you’ll manage to capture a photo that’s both in-focus and well-composed. Simply set your camera to its AF-S (or One-Shot AF) setting, set the AF point to the center of the frame, half-press your shutter button to lock focus on an area of clear contrast in the scene, then recompose the shot. First, you can try using the focus-and-recompose technique. When that happens, you have two options, both of which are generally effective. Don’t be afraid to use manual focusĪs I mentioned in the previous tip, winter landscapes can be intensely white – and when you’re dealing with monochromatic scenes, your camera will often struggle to lock focus. Just find a dominant color or tone in the otherwise white landscape, then use careful composition techniques to make it a standout focal point. Maybe there’s an autumn leaf laying on top of a thin layer of snow, or maybe you can see a few skiers wearing red jackets, or maybe you’re standing before a dark mountain surrounded by white. ![]() Make sense?īy the way, I find red color contrast to be particularly pleasing in winter landscape scenes, but you can really search for any dominant color or tonal variation. So you can just go around with your camera, searching for an eye-catching element or two. Happily, contrast is easy to find on snowy days because it’ll catch your eye just the same as it’ll catch a photo viewer’s eye. Without it, the scene would lack a focal point and the viewer’s eyes would have no place to rest, which would make for a bad shot. The red color is what makes this picture interesting. Here’s an example of color contrast, where I found a red house against a white and gray background: You look for contrast – either color contrast, where you find a splash of red, blue, or green against the white – or tonal contrast, such as a splash of darkness against the bright snow. And when everything is white, it’s quite challenging to find a compositional focal point as nothing really catches the eye. Look for contrast to make those winter compositions stand outĪfter a few days of heavy snowfall, the landscape will be completely white: white trees, white lakes, white mountains, and (normally) a white sky. That way, you can capture the photos you want, but you don’t risk yourself or your gear in the process. Instead, you should wait until the snow stops or head out in advance. If you plan to photograph a snowy mountain scene from a high altitude, you’ll want to avoid driving in during a blizzard. You should also watch the weather for safety reasons. It can help to observe the snowflakes before setting off to make sure they’re reasonably large and are falling sufficiently fast otherwise, you may struggle to capture the kind of moody winter landscape you’re pursuing. If you want to photograph mountains or trees in a snowstorm, make sure you head out in the thick of the snow (or just before the snow starts). If you want to photograph a pristine snowfall at sunrise, make sure you choose a morning just after the snow has ended so that the blanket of white is completely undisturbed.Instead, you need to think about the type of images you want to create, then make plans that coincide with your weather requirements. ![]() There’s not one best type of weather for winter landscape photography, of course. Weather can be the difference between an exhilarating photoshoot and a wasted handful of hours – so it’s always important to check the weather in advance, follow the weather on your phone, and constantly observe the conditions while you’re out shooting. So if you’re ready to take your winter images to the next level, then let’s dive right in, starting with my first tip: 1. More than 50 years later, those nine underground Atlas sites are largely ignored except by curiosity-seekers and military history buffs. He marvels, “That missiles could be fired from southwest Oklahoma and they could land in the Soviet Union in less than an hour.”īrewer, though, researched and wrote an article about them. He cleaned out the old command module but left the missile bay alone filled with more than a hundred feet of water.īrewer says, “A five man crew lived underground 24 hours a day.” They never looked like much from the surface, but back in 2009 we toured another for the 11 former Atlas missile sites with a man named David Johnson who wanted to turn it into an underground home. “Late in the Eisenhower Administration we developed the first American intercontinental ballistic missile, which was the Atlas,” he says.
